FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & ANSWERS IN REGARDS TO
WHAT DOES OUR PUBLICIST DO FOR OUR CLIENTS?
WHY SHOULD I HIRE ONE?
So, what is a celebrity publicist? Wikipedia defines a publicist as someone “whose job is to generate and manage publicity for a public figure,” and “one of the publicist’s main functions is to generate press coverage on behalf of clients and to serve as the bridge between clients, their public and media outlets.” This is a solid example of exactly what a publicist does, and how their role is the middle man between media and celebrity.
How do media relations relate to being a publicist? Let’s take a trip back in time: The year is 1960. You are a celebrity, and you are about to release a new movie. How do you get the word out? What things can you do to get people to the box office? Is its posters? Do you create a radio spot?
Now let’s bring things back to today’s day in age, the year 2019: You’re a celebrity or one on the rise?.
You have a movie coming out. The question now is which avenue do you use to promote your movie. Do you Tweet/Facebook/Instagram about it? Do you go on a talk show? Do you make a commercial or even a YouTube video?
The point of these two scenarios is to compare how much media has changed in just over half a century. Media is much more complex and vast today, which some celebrities tend to think has its pros and its cons. With the media greatly expanding, media relations have become much more necessary for celebrities, as they need someone (maybe even more than one person) to tackle their media coverage and keep their image as wholesome and true as possible.
What is publicist responsible for? When a publicist has a client, they are responsible for their interviews and/or press tours, print and online media coverage, crisis communications, and if the celebrity has a premiere or big event coming up (think award season) they are responsible for getting their client coverage on that front. Publicists are busiest in the Fall and slow down in the Summer. The more award season, movie premieres, or crises, the busier they are; the fewer, the less busy.
What kind of business does a publicist operate in? Most successful publicists in Hollywood work for independently owned firms or firms owned by large media companies. An example of a large media company is the Interpublic Group (IPG) which owns PMK*BNC, one of the largest entertainment publicity firms. Bigger firms tend to have several divisions within the company (television, digital, brands, etc.) and others more medium to small-sized solely manage celebrity talent.
What’s so important about a publicist anyhow? No celebrity wants their image to be compromised, and every celebrity wants their projects to get coverage. Creating strong media relations is difficult; it’s not a one-man show, and successful long term relationships with media can be beneficial for a celebrity future project(s). With the development of fast media in recent years, the publicist is absolutely necessary for celebrities to have a successful career.
